The United Nations called on Ukraine to expedite the ratification of the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe on the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and the Fight against These Phenomena, the UN official website in Ukraine reports.

The statement said that the UN heeds the petition for ratification of the Istanbul Convention in Ukraine, gaining the required 25,000 votes.

In this regard, “the United Nations in Ukraine calls on the Parliament of Ukraine to take measures to ratify the Istanbul Convention and take the measures necessary to create a society free of gender-based violence,” the statement said.

At the moment, the legislation of Ukraine contains a full range of laws that protect against violence. However, in Ukrainian laws there is no gender terminology contained in the convention, according to which "gender", in contrast to "sex", suggests a lot of variance.

Earlier, the UOJ wrote that 25,000 people signed a petition against the law on punishment for criticizing LGBT.
