On June 8, 2023, the Russian Federation, with the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church, handed over to Hungary a group of captured soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of “Transcarpathian origin,” the website of the Moscow Patriarchate reports.
“As part of inter-church cooperation, at the request of the Hungarian side, a group of Ukrainian POWs of Transcarpathian origin, who participated in the hostilities, was transferred to Hungary,” the message says.
It is indicated that the action, "driven by the motives of Christian philanthropy", was held with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the DECR, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, and Adviser to the Patriarch, Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, took part in it from the Moscow Patriarchate.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that Metropolitan Onuphry called for an exchange of prisoners between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
