On October 18, 2023, the head of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Patriarch Bartholomew, stated during a meeting with Catholic bishops in Spain that the Ecumenical Patriarchate has always played a decisive role in unity with the Roman Catholic Church (RCC), as reported by orthodoxia.info.

Addressing the RCC bishops in Spain, Patriarch Bartholomew expressed that it is a "great honor and privilege for him to stand before them today and witness our substantive and enriching dialogue."

He emphasized that this meeting serves as a testament to the strength and purpose that unites their Churches in response to the Lord's command to "be one."

Patriarch Bartholomew highlighted that on the common path towards full ecclesiological communion with Catholics, the Ecumenical Patriarchate has consistently played a decisive role. They have supported dialogue, facilitated mutual understanding, and defended the fundamental principles of love and unity, which underpin their joint ecumenical quest.

It was previously reported by the UOJ that, according to Patriarch Bartholomew, sharing the "common chalice" with Catholics is inevitable.
