On October 14, the first official press conference of Cardinal-designate Mykola Bychok, the ruling bishop of the Melbourne Eparchy of the UGCC, took place at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Melbourne, according to the UGCC press service.

At the meeting with journalists, he brought with him a Ukrainian flag that had been with soldiers in battles for Karlivka, Marinka, Avdiivka, and other cities.

"This flag was with our soldiers on the battlefield. It was carried in fierce battles, and then, when captured by Russian troops, they were tortured, sometimes with the flag wrapped around their heads. The flag bears traces of blood and footprints," the bishop shared.

Bishop Mykola of the UGCC also quoted the words of Pope Francis, who called for an end to the killing of civilians and airstrikes on Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of this message for Ukrainians who are facing a difficult winter.

As reported by the UOJ, on October 6, 2024, after the "Angelus" prayer, Pope Francis announced that a consistory would take place on December 8, during which new cardinals would be appointed. Among those chosen is Bishop Mykola Bychok of the Melbourne Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (Australia).
