Zelenskyy responds to the petition to legalize same-sex unions
On August 2, 2022, Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the petition published on July 3 to legalize same-sex marriage in Ukraine. The response of the President is posted on the website of electronic petitions.
The Head of State recalled that according to the Constitution of Ukraine, marriage is a family union of a woman and a man, and the Constitution cannot be changed under martial law.
“At the same time, the government has developed options for decisions regarding the legalization of registered civil partnerships in Ukraine in the context of establishing and ensuring human rights and freedoms,” Zelensky said and instructed Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal to consider the issue raised in the petition and inform about the results.
As of 14:15 on August 2, 2022, the proposal to legalize same-sex unions was approved by 28,592 people.
As the UOJ wrote, according to the poll, more and more Ukrainians support the LGBT community.
